What is un-sprung weight?
It's the death of a good
handling machine! The reason it won't happen is that you need a way to propel your quad.
You need tires to put traction to the ground. And, you need suspension
to attach the tires to your quad. Herein lies the problem. All
that weight of the tires, wheels, suspension, In theory, the suspension would allow the tires to follow the contours of the ground, wheels dropping in and out of potholes and ruts, without you feeling a thing. In reality, all that weight pushes the frame of your quad up over bumps and pulls it down into dips. So what can be done? Put your quad on a diet! Lighter wheels, tires, hubs and spindles all contribute to a better handling quad. An aluminum rear axle would be a HUGE weight savings! But a huge drain on your wallet as well! Wider tires will NOT make your quad handle any better, unless, they weigh less than the stock tires do! So as your out shopping for new suspension components check out the weight of each item. The more pounds you can shed, the better your quad will handle the rough. Not to mention it will increase your power to weight ratio as well! |
